Where Was God , on May 15, 1974?
|
On
May 15, 1974,
12
year-old, Deborah Yvonne Davis lived the last day of
her first life.
An
innocent ride down Crispus Attucks Road in backwater,
Reedville, Arkansaswith the son of the most powerful
family in Arkansaswould change her life forever.
Author
Gene Cartwright's third, and long-awaited novel, A FAMILY
GATHERING, has been fourteen years in the making. It
is not hyperbole to say that not since "The Color Purple,"
published in 1982, has a novel about the black experience
been poised to create such a whirlwind of praise, debate,
controversy and recognition.
Cartwright's
saga, depicting the 'tragic to triumphant' life of Deborah
Yvonne Davisa young southern girl, daughter of
a rural, Baptist preacheris steeped with realism
and vivid detail from the very first paragraph. It takes
risks, pulls no punches regarding racism, bigotry, politics,
and family turmoil affecting blacks and whites.
This superbly written novel is so filled with flavor,
texture, detail and realism; it would be a disservice,
to say more here.
Some
will decry the author's revelation of the internecineblack
on blackwarfare within the black community. They
will say it reveals too much. But no one will say it
is not an honest portrayal. The characters are so well
developed, you will swear you know these people.
And
the gripping book jacket gives but a hint of what is
to come. One cannot view this book, even from a distance,
and not be drawn in...to at least examine it further.
But beware. You are soon drawn in to the story of this
young girl separated from her parents and four siblings
for fourteen years.
During her exile, Deborahe is forced to create a new
identity in Chicago, with an aunt who takes her in.
But she fails to escape the demons that drive her to
attempt suicide. Still, she triumphs, confounding those
who pray she never returns to Reedville. But she does
return...to A Family Gatheringa decision
which unleashes forces that yield both life and death.
Gene Cartwright's first novel, I Never Played Catch
With My Father, controversial because the author
dared to write outside his own ethnicity, is till in
print. The novel took him on a two-year, coast to coast
tour with wide national media, including NPR and Oprah.
It earned him well-deserved acclaim and commercial success.
Half Moon, Full Heart is his second novel. (Author
